Almost every foreigner moving to Medellín ends up choosing between the same two neighbourhoods: El Poblado, the international hub in the south-east of the city, and Laureles, the flat, tree-lined neighbourhood in the west that many long-term expats end up preferring. Both are excellent; they just suit different people. Here's how they compare.

El Poblado: the international hub
El Poblado concentrates the city's best-known restaurants, cafés, coworking spaces, hotels and nightlife, especially around Provenza, Manila and Parque Lleras. It has the largest expat community and the widest choice of furnished apartments with pools, gyms and views. It's also where the city's business corridor, the Milla de Oro, runs.
The trade-offs are price and terrain. El Poblado is the most expensive area of Medellín, and much of it climbs steep hills, so outside the flat strip around Provenza and the park you'll rely on taxis or ride apps. Within El Poblado, the experience changes a lot from one sector to another: Provenza is the lively centre, Manila its quieter neighbour, Lalinde and Astorga are residential, and Los Balsos and Las Lomas are the exclusive hillside.
Laureles: the local favourite
Laureles was planned around circular streets, parks and wide tree-lined avenues, and it's flat — rare in Medellín. You can walk to cafés, gyms, supermarkets and restaurants, and the neighbourhood life feels genuinely Colombian. The area around La 70 and the stadium adds bars, sport and the Estadio metro station.
Furnished rents are typically 15–25% lower than in El Poblado, and long-term leases are noticeably cheaper too. The trade-off is a smaller choice of high-end buildings with resort-style amenities, and less English spoken day to day. Explore central Laureles, quieter Conquistadores or residential La Castellana.
Which one suits you?
Choose El Poblado if…
- It's your first time in Medellín and you want everything easy, in English if needed.
- You want restaurants, nightlife and coworking spaces within walking distance.
- You value building amenities — pool, gym, views — and your budget allows it.
- You're looking at an investment property with strong demand from foreign tenants.
Choose Laureles if…
- You want to live like a local and walk everywhere on flat streets.
- You're staying several months and want your budget to stretch further.
- You'd rather have parks and neighbourhood cafés than nightlife on your doorstep.
- You'll use the metro to get around.
If you're moving with a family
For families with children, El Poblado's residential sectors such as Lalinde or Astorga work best, with gated buildings and schools nearby; in Laureles, Conquistadores and La Castellana offer spacious apartments with less traffic. If you want a house with a garden, look at Los Benedictinos in Envigado.
Getting around from each one
From El Poblado, the airport road via Las Palmas is close, and the business district is on your doorstep; from Laureles, the metro and the western avenues get you downtown and to the stadium quickly, while the trip to El Poblado takes about 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic. If you'll commute daily, map the route at rush hour before you sign.
Can't decide? Do both
Many of our clients book a month in El Poblado to land, then move to Laureles — or the other way round — once they know the city. With monthly furnished rentals from 30 days, trying both is easy. And if neither feels right, Envigado offers a quieter, greener alternative just south of El Poblado.
